Amazon’s fashion bet shifts to speed

Amazon is expanding Amazon Now to 300 cities as it looks to bring quick-commerce convenience to fashion and lifestyle shopping. Orders on the service have doubled every quarter, while Prime members are tripling their shopping frequency after adopting it.

The company is also seeing a major shift towards Gen Z-led discovery, creator influence and premium fashion.

Amazon’s fashion bet shifts to speed
Mumbai : Amazon is expanding its fashion playbook beyond conventional online shopping, placing greater emphasis on faster delivery, creator-led discovery, premium brands and artificial intelligence to capture changing consumer demand.

The company plans to expand Amazon Now to 300 cities, targeting occasions where customers need fashion and lifestyle products quickly. Rather than replacing traditional fashion shopping, the service is being positioned as an additional option for time-sensitive purchases.

Nikhil Sinha, Director, Amazon Fashion India, said orders on Amazon Now have doubled every quarter since launch, while Prime members are tripling their shopping frequency after they begin using the service.

“Speed matters when the moment has a clock on it,” Sinha said.

Quick commerce enters fashion

The potential for faster fashion delivery becomes particularly visible when demand is linked to specific events.

The T20 World Cup offered a clear example. According to Sinha, jersey demand on Amazon rose 2.5X ahead of match days and reached as much as 8X on match days.

Amazon does not expect this model to replace the way consumers shop for considered fashion purchases. A customer looking for a special-occasion outfit may still browse, compare and decide over several days, while Amazon Now caters to requirements where waiting is less practical.

The expansion therefore adds a new layer to fashion commerce: planned shopping can coexist with occasion-led, immediate demand.

Discovery starts before search

Consumer behaviour is also changing. Shoppers are increasingly arriving with screenshots, creator recommendations, occasions or simply a “vibe”, rather than a specific product in mind.

“Five years ago, our job was largely to answer a search. Today, it often begins before the customer knows what to search for,” Sinha said.

Amazon is responding with greater emphasis on curation, trends and creator-led discovery.
Its Gen Z storefront, SERVE, launched in 2023 and now reaches millions of customers with 350-plus brands. Amazon's Influencer Program has also crossed 100,000 creators.

Gen Z now accounts for more than half of Amazon Fashion's customer base, compared with about 30% two years ago. The company said Gen Z customer growth in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities is running at twice the national rate.

The trend indicates that fashion discovery is increasingly being shaped by social influence and emerging consumer markets, rather than only by conventional product searches.

Brands focus on repeat demand

The shift is also changing how brands measure performance. Customer acquisition remains important, but sustained engagement and repeat purchases are becoming stronger indicators of brand health.

“The definition has moved from growth at any cost to quality of growth. A launch tells you whether a brand can acquire customers. Repeat tells you whether it's earned them,” Sinha said.

Amazon Fashion has introduced more than 50 brands this year, including WROGN, Rare Rabbit, Nike and FabIndia.

WROGN's run rates quadrupled during Prime Day after its launch, according to the company, while D2C footwear brand theater has grown 7X year-on-year. New D2C apparel brands on Amazon Fashion are growing 4X.

Premiumisation gains momentum

Premium fashion is emerging as another growth driver.

Premium fashion on Amazon is growing 2X faster than the category overall, with nearly one in five rupees spent on Amazon Fashion going towards premium brands.

Sinha said consumers are not abandoning value. Instead, they are becoming more selective about the areas where they are willing to trade up.

“People want value in some parts of their life and distinction in others — often in the same shopping session,” he said.

For brands, this creates room for a more segmented approach, where affordability and premium positioning can both find a place within the same marketplace.

AI tackles fashion hesitation

Amazon's next major focus is AI-led discovery, aimed at addressing some of the uncertainty that can prevent consumers from completing fashion purchases online.

The company is using tools such as Rufus, virtual try-on and “Wear It With” to help shoppers assess fit, appearance and styling.

The goal is to simplify the journey. Instead of searching separately across categories, customers could describe an occasion and budget and receive suggestions for a complete look.
“The bet isn't AI for its own sake. It's confidence at scale,” Sinha said.

Editorial Insight | Signature Media News

Amazon's planned 300-city expansion is significant not simply because it extends quick commerce into more markets, but because it connects several changes taking place in fashion at the same time.

Speed addresses urgent occasions, creators influence discovery, premiumisation is lifting higher-value purchases, while AI aims to make online fashion decisions easier.

The larger opportunity for Amazon lies in bringing these elements together. As Gen Z adoption grows and demand from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities accelerates, the next phase of fashion e-commerce could increasingly be shaped by when consumers want something, how they discover it and how confidently they make the final purchase.
